Almanzo Wilder has his eyes set on one thing - a colt of his very own.

But nobody trusts a boy of nearly nine not to teach them bad habits. Father says they take months to train out if little boys mess with them.

So in the meantime, he's busy learning to be a farmer like his father, everything from looking after the cows to hauling wood. And if he can show he can train oxen, maybe Father will one day let him have a colt. And at very least, it'll mean he doesn't have to go to school too often.


Almanzo is eight at the start of the novel, caucasian but appropriately tanned. He wears clothes of home-spun woolcloth and is generally suitably muddy.


Almanzo Wilder was a real person, the husband of Laura Ingalls Wilder. This version is taken from the fictional novel based on his life, Farmer Boy, and subsequent novels in the Little House on the Prarie Series.
